History of Odisha (25/03/2025): In a landmark move to elevate Odisha’s agricultural profile on the global stage, the state government has signed a significant 15-year agreement to promote the distinctive Dhenkanal mangoes internationally. This strategic initiative, finalized on Monday at Lok Seva Bhawan, reflects Odisha’s growing ambition to establish itself as a key player in the global agricultural market.
Historic Agreement for Dhenkanal Mangoes
The agreement was inked by Deputy Chief Ministers KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, in the presence of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra. The Odisha government, in collaboration with a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), aims to leverage the rich agricultural potential of the Dhenkanal district, renowned for its premium-quality mangoes.
Deputy CM KV Singh Deo highlighted the significance of this agreement, stating,
“Two MoUs (Memorandums of Understanding) have been signed. One is for the export of mangoes to international markets from a proposed mango hub in Dhenkanal, for 15 years. Another MoU was signed with the concerned party for the export of fruit products from Odisha to other countries through Mission Shakti.”
A Mango Hub in Dhenkanal
A key component of the agreement includes the establishment of a dedicated mango hub in Dhenkanal. This hub is expected to serve as a centralized processing and export facility, ensuring that Odisha’s mangoes meet global quality standards. The creation of this hub will also provide local farmers with improved infrastructure, better market access, and increased profitability.
Deputy CM Pravati Parida emphasized the broader impact of this initiative on women’s empowerment, stating,
“It is an auspicious day for all of us that MoUs were inked to export agricultural products of our State. The Mission Shakti department has been striving to strengthen the roles of women, and these tie-ups will help focus district-based produce. This step will play a pioneering role in women’s empowerment.”
Boost to Odisha’s Agricultural Economy
This initiative is expected to create a ripple effect across Odisha’s agricultural sector. By opening up global markets, local farmers will have the opportunity to showcase their produce internationally, leading to increased income and improved living standards. The focus on district-based produce, facilitated through Mission Shakti, will further strengthen rural economies and promote self-reliance.
A Proven Track Record of Success
This isn’t the first time Odisha’s agricultural exports have made headlines. In a significant achievement, over a tonne of premium-quality papaya from Dhenkanal was recently exported to London and Ireland — a milestone that marks Odisha’s successful entry into European markets. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi expressed his excitement on social media, applauding the agriculture department’s efforts and the farmers’ hard work.
Conclusion
The Odisha government’s decision to push for global recognition of Dhenkanal mangoes and other agricultural produce represents a strategic and forward-looking approach to economic development. By focusing on agricultural exports and women’s empowerment through Mission Shakti, the state is setting a precedent for rural growth and global market integration. This initiative not only promises financial gains for local farmers but also positions Odisha as a key player in the international agricultural market.
